The Last Emperor chronicles the life of Aisin-Gioro Pu Yi, the final emperor of China's Qing Dynasty, from 1908 to 1967. Initially installed as a child in the Forbidden City by the dowager empress, Pu Yi is shielded from the world, preferring a carefree life. In 1912, he's forced to abdicate, becoming a captive in his palace. Enamored with his tutor's worldliness, Pu Yi marries Manchu descendant Wan Jung to escape. As an adult, he implements reforms and expels corrupt eunuchs. In 1924, a warlord's invasion allows Pu Yi to embrace Western culture in Tientsin. Later, he becomes a Japanese pawn, humiliating his wife and engaging in affairs. During WWII, he's forced to endorse Japanese activities. Captured by Russians, he's re-educated and later works as a gardener, visiting the Forbidden City as a tourist. Bernardo Bertolucci's film, released in two versions, won nine Academy Awards.
